"A life consecrated to God through prayer and work"

With unwavering faith and divine inspiration, Late Rev. Mother Mary Charles Anyanwu OSB answered God's call to establish Visitation Monastery, creating a sacred space where consecrated women could dedicate their lives entirely to prayer, work, and service to God and humanity.

Her vision was clear: to build a community that would live the Benedictine charism authentically in the Nigerian context, embracing the ancient wisdom of "Ora et Labora" - Prayer and Work - while extending radical hospitality to all who seek God.

Through her leadership and spiritual guidance, Mother Mary Charles laid the foundation for what has become a flourishing community of faith, continuing to inspire us daily as we carry forward her legacy of devotion, charity, and hospitality.

Our Journey

The History of Visitation Monastery

We are the Benedictine Nuns of Visitation Monastery Akpugoeze, Enugu State, Nigeria, domiciled in the Catholic Diocese of Ekwulobia. Visitation Benedictine Monastery belongs to the Benedictine Order in the Roman Catholic Church.

February 17, 2004

Foundation Day

Visitation Monastery was founded by Late Rev. Mother Mary Charles Anyanwu OSB. This sacred day marked the beginning of a new chapter in Benedictine life in Nigeria, as Mother Mary Charles responded to God's call to establish a community dedicated to contemplative prayer and service.

March 14, 2004

Official Opening

The monastery was officially opened with 10 pioneering nuns who courageously embraced the monastic vocation. These founding sisters laid the cornerstone of what would become a thriving community, establishing the rhythms of prayer, work, and hospitality that continue to define our life today.

2004 - 2022

Growth and Flourishing

Under Mother Mary Charles' wise guidance, the community grew from 10 to 24 sisters. Each new vocation brought fresh energy and gifts to the community, enriching our prayer life and expanding our ministries. The monastery became known throughout the region as a place of deep spirituality, authentic hospitality, and joyful witness to consecrated life.

Raised to Monastery Sui Juris

A momentous day in our history! Visitation Monastery was raised to the status of Monastery SUI JURIS (independent priory) by the Sacred Congregation. This recognition affirms the maturity, stability, and vitality of our community. As an independent priory, we have greater autonomy in governance while maintaining our bonds with the wider Benedictine family and the universal Church.

Present Day - 2026

24 Consecrated Sisters

Today, we are a vibrant community of 24 Benedictine nuns, each uniquely called by God yet united in our common mission. We continue to live the Benedictine charism with joy and dedication, welcoming guests, cultivating the land, creating beautiful liturgical items, and above all, lifting our voices in prayer seven times daily plus Holy Mass.

Our Identity

The Meaning of Our Logo

Mary's Visitation to Elizabeth

Mary's Visitation to Her Cousin Elizabeth

Our logo depicts the profound biblical scene of Mary's visitation to her cousin Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-56), a moment that embodies the very essence of our monastic identity and mission.

Hospitality

Just as Mary visited Elizabeth, bringing Christ with her, we welcome all guests as bearers of Christ. The Visitation symbolizes our openness to welcome guests and the people of God who are never lacking in our monastery. Every visitor is received with warmth, dignity, and reverence.

Service in Charity

Mary's visit was an act of loving service to her elderly cousin. We too are called to serve God and humanity through our lives of prayer and work, always ready to assist those in need with charity and compassion.

Community in Joy

The Visitation was a moment of profound joy when Elizabeth proclaimed, "Blessed are you among women!" Our community life is marked by joy - the deep joy that comes from union with God and from sharing life with our sisters.

Bearing Christ to the World

Mary carried the Word Made Flesh to Elizabeth. We carry Christ to the world through our prayer, our work, our hospitality, and our very lives. We are called to be Christ-bearers in our Nigerian context and beyond.

The Visitation is our identity: We are women who go forth in haste to serve, who bring joy and blessing wherever we go, who create space for others to encounter the living God, and who remain in constant communion with Mary, the first disciple and perfect model of Benedictine life.

Our Mission

Prayer and Work - Ora et Labora

Prayer and work. We are consecrated women who dedicate our lives to prayer, work and community living, for the service of God and Humanity. We follow the Rule of St. Benedict of Norcia that stresses work and prayer - 'Ora et Labora'.

We are consecrated women who have given our lives entirely to God, living in community and dedicating each day to:

  • Praying the seven canonical hours daily plus Holy Mass
  • Engaging in manual labor for the sustenance of our community
  • Extending hospitality to all people of God
  • Living the Rule of St. Benedict in authentic community

Our Vision and Aim

Union with God through Charity and Hospitality

Union with God through Charity and Hospitality. We strive to be a beacon of faith, welcoming all people of God who seek spiritual renewal and encounter with the Divine.

Our ultimate aim is union with God, which we pursue through:

  • Practicing charity in all our relationships
  • Welcoming guests as Christ himself
  • Creating a sanctuary of peace in Nigeria
  • Being witnesses of God's love to all denominations and walks of life
What Makes Us Unique

Sacred Symbols of Our Life

The Bell Tower

The Voice of God

The bell tower is the voice of God that regulates the daily rhythm of our community life, from prayers at vigil to evening times calling us to prayer. It is integral to our liturgy, reminding the people of God and encouraging a sense of spiritual wonder.

Each chime of the bell echoes through the hills of Akpugoeze, calling us to leave our work and gather before the Lord. The bell speaks without words, yet its message is clear: "Come, let us worship the Lord." It marks not just the hours, but sacred moments of encounter with the Divine.

Our Guest House

A Haven for All God's People

We have guest and retreat accommodation open to the people of God of different denominations and walks of life. Our guest house embodies the Benedictine charism of hospitality, welcoming all who seek peace, prayer, and spiritual renewal.

Whether you come for a day of recollection, a weekend retreat, or an extended stay, you will find a warm welcome, comfortable accommodation, and a sacred space to encounter God. Here, surrounded by prayer and silence, souls are refreshed and spirits are renewed.

Our Core Values

Living the Benedictine Way

Prayer - Ora

Seven canonical hours daily plus Holy Mass form the heartbeat of our community. Prayer is the source and summit of our life, the reason we exist.

Work - Labora

Through agriculture, piggery, poultry, soap making, and ecclesiastical sewing, we support our community and serve God through the work of our hands.

Hospitality

Following the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, we welcome all guests as Christ himself, offering refuge and spiritual nourishment.

Community Living

We are 24 sisters living, praying, and working together, supporting one another in our journey toward God.

Consecrated Life

We have given our lives entirely to God through vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, following the Rule of St. Benedict.

Charity

Love of God and love of neighbor guide all we do. Through charity, we seek union with God and service to humanity.
